The best phones offer great cameras, the performance you need for multitasking and the endurance of
the day. You don't have to wait for the iPhone 12 if you need a great smartphone right now, but it might just be a couple of weeks away.

Some may prefer to have the largest possible display along with the more advanced specifications. Others want a powerful mid-range phone that provides all the basics without getting bored.

What are the best phones?

Based on our tests, iPhone 11 is the best phone for most people, as it takes great photos, boasts a bright screen, and offers long battery life. It's a great option for under $ 700. However, iPhone 12 will add 5G and will be here soon, so put off unless you desperately need a phone now.

Samsung's new Galaxy Note 20 Ultra ranks second - a truly premium smartphone in every sense of the word, from the powerful Snapdragon 865 Plus CPU to the 120Hz adaptive screen and triple-lens rear camera. And if you're on a budget, the OnePlus 8 Pro is a compelling alternative for Android users, as it offers excellent overall performance, long battery life and superfast charging for hundreds of fewer new Note.

Price-conscious consumers are especially advised to look at the new $ 399 iPhone SE. It delivers a very good camera and fast A13 Bionic performance in a compact design. However, the Google Pixel 4a is a better deal at $ 349, offering twice the iPhone SE storage space for $ 50 less, plus a night mode camera, a bigger screen - and last but not least - a headphone jack.

The must-see phone is the new Samsung Galaxy S20 FE, which costs just $ 699 and offers great features for the money. This includes a 120Hz screen, 5G display, large battery, and a versatile triple camera system.

How do we test smartphones

For a smartphone to enter our top phone list, it must excel in the many tests we run on each phone. We run some of these tests in our labs and some of them in the real world.

When it comes to performance, we rely on synthetic benchmarks like Geekbench 5 and GFXBench to measure graphics performance. These tests allow us to compare performance across iPhone and Android devices. We also run a real test of converting video encoding on every phone with Adobe Premiere Rush application and result time.

To measure the quality of the phone screen, we conduct laboratory tests to determine the panel brightness (in candles), as well as the color range of each screen (color gamut DCI-P3). In these cases, higher numbers are better. We also measure the color accuracy of each palette with a Delta-E rating, with fewer numbers being better and a score of 0 ideal.

The battery test is one of the most important tests we run. We are doing web browsing test over 5G or 4G at screen brightness 150 nits until battery runs out. In general, a phone that lasts 10 hours or more is fine, and phones over 11 hours make it the best battery life for a phone.

Last but not least, we take the industry's best phones for outdoor, indoor and night photography in low light to see how they perform compared to that of their closest competitors. We take pictures of landscapes, food, portraits and more and we allow you to be the judge by the side-by-side comparisons in our reviews.
